Münsterland LNG modernization passes technical sea trials

The Münsterland, a passenger ship converted to run on LNG for the German ferry operator AG Ems, has completed technical sea trials.

In addition to refueling the ship with LNG, the technical tests also included the commissioning of the new machines for the first time.

All components of the new gas tank propulsion system, generators, electric traction motors, Azignel propellers and auxiliary units were installed in the newly built aft vessel.

As on the MV Ostfriesland, a Type C liquid gas tank was also used here – the containers consist of an inner tank and an outer one, which is used for protection. In between, the vacuum insulation ensures that the ambient conditions remain constant as the liquid gas is stored in the tank at -162 ° C and 5 bar pressure.

The size of the special integrated tank is new, because unlike the MS Ostfriesland, where there is a geometric volume of 45 cbm, the tank of the MS Münsterland contains 53 cbm. The larger volume was made possible by an enlarged inner diameter of the inner tank and improved insulation and therefore a smaller layer width.

“The GVUs, that is to say the gas valve blocks, could now be housed in the tank installation room, so that this space in the engine room has become free”, Michael baumfalk, said the project manager of AG Ems.

The MS Münsterland will be the third ship in the AG EMS group to run on environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas. LNG is made up of methane and is cooled to minus 162 ° C. LNG can reduce nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides by 90% and 95%, as well as carbon dioxide by 20% and almost completely avoid fine dust.

“We have been seen as pioneers across the EU and we want to stay that way. This means not only to be the first to rely on LNG, but also to develop and pursue it in a coherent manner ”, Bernard brons, underlined the member of the board of directors of AG Ems.

Münsterland is expected to resume service at the end of January. It will operate again on the Eemshaven – Borkum line.

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure as part of the implementation of the Federal Government’s Mobility and Fuel Strategy (MKS). The financing measure is coordinated by NOW GmbH.
